I like Apple TV. But unfortunately their movie selection sucks. For instance the movie The Ugly Truth must be purchased to be viewed.
On Netflix you can rent the movie.
Also the “mission impossible” policy of rented movies dissapearing from AT after 24 hours is arcane
I’m considering hooking up to Netflix streaming video now that they
support the Mac

What I do is combine FairMount with Handbrake to convert to iTunes files or DVDIdle with Nero to create them on Windows boxes. These basically buffer the DVD so it can be copied/converted.

DVD Backup Software I love to use is FairMount (MAC) and DVDIdle (PC). To get FairMount, you must download DVDRemaster. These turn the DVD into DMG/ISO's to copy or play from. FairMount requires VLC for it to work.

I use Roxio Toast 10 and elgato turbo.264HD to rip dvd’s and convert to apple tv.

I want to recommend FFMpegX ( http://ffmpegx.com/ ) which is superior to the (now defunct) VisualHub and is FREE!

(You should also remove VisualHub & iSquint since Techspansion closed up shop)

Additionally, in the realm of file level access to copy protected DVDs, there is FairMount.

I’ve been using it to pull source off DVDs that Handbrake bonks on.

I used RipIt and is one of the easiest ripping programs I have ever come across. Now I am trying to view the dvd on my apple tv. Do I need another program to convert or am I just missing a step?

I’d also like to recommend this mac total video converter, I know it can convert DVD movie, video and HD video to mp4 video for apple tv.

Huge thanks for this website. Scrolling through ATV’s multiple menus, genres, etc. on ATV to find ALL of the new rentals is exasperrating. Great service!
