Update 3 – The Unofficial Apple Weblog has a thorough walkthrough of the new 2.1 update with screenshots.

Update 2 – We’ll be consolidating and listing all of the additions to Apple TV later today. Needless to say this update packed a little more of a punch for Apple TV then most thought would happen.

Update 1 – It appears that with this MobileMe update Apple has also updated the My Photos area of Apple TV. By selecting an album under My Photos you now get a list of thumbnails, similar to what you might see in iPhoto. Can anyone else confirm this as a new feature?

Well the day is here, and Apple is making sure that all parts are in place for the iPhone 3g. So what does that mean UPDATES!!! Engadget is reporting iTunes 7.7 in now available. iLounge has info on the Apple TV update that gives support for MobleMe, and remote function from your iPod touch or iPhone. iLounge also has a little blurb about the remote app. So go and update to your hearts content.

With little news, or even rumors in the pipe I have had very little to post about. So should we as ATV owners worry about the future of our beloved means of video streaming? Roku seems to be the main competition right now, but currently is limited to what Netflix can stream. Xbox360 has downloadable content and you can get it in HD; but, storage is an issue even if you have the 120gb HDD, and don’t get me started on the MS “points” system. The Xbox also integrates well with Vista media center, and there is the long standing rumor of Netflix software for the 360. I doubt Apple will throw in the towel anytime soon but we need more features, more studios, more HD (TV Rentals would be nice), or maybe partner with Netflix? I like the idea of Netflix streaming to the Apple TV, but that would hurt sales of movies and shows so I doubt Steve would go for it. So what should Apple do next?

The New York Times is reporting that Sony will allow owners of a Internet-enabled Bravia (The Bravia Internet link) to download Hancock before the DVD hits. Should Apple try to move into this space? I mean Jobs kind of oversees Disney/Pixar and they just released a big hit over the weekend. 1 + 1 = Apple TV sales in my book; still the Wall-E DVD and Blu Ray will outsell any downloads, but an early rental would be nice. What I still can’t understand is Sony, they worked so hard to kill HD-DVD but yet are trying to push DL content to the PS3 and Bravia. That seems kind of counterintuitive to me why push for a new format (Blu Ray) that you already want to push out with downloads.

Engadget is reporting that Sony will start offering movie downloads this summer in North America. Now 2 of the 3 major gaming consoles in America offer downloads. Competition is a good thing in the rental download game, lets hope Apple steps up and starts offering more movies, and more Apple TV support to stay ahead.

I was thinking over the weekend, with the coming app store, why not an Apple TV app? Think about it; from your iPhone or iPod touch queue up a movie you want to rent or buy and have it waiting for you when you get home. Valleywag is reporting that YouTube will now offer aspiring film makers a chance to sell on there site. The Screening Room will let film makers upload and sell right off of YouTube. I think this is a fantastic idea its hard to get your movie sold and this is a way you can take it right to the public. Apple has lead the way with getting podcast to the masses and this seems like it would be the next evolutionary step. I would like to see Apple do something like this using iTunes in the same way they have with some indie music.
