So, as we can see, the secret is to have a brand new Mac, or have an ethernet connection. My connection is via my old airport base station. It is only 802.11g but if speed was important then I could hardwire direct to my new (2009) dual band base station or I could shell out for an airport express and hard wire into that. One involves me crawling under the house running cat 6 cable, the other 200 hard earned NZ dollars. I think I'll live with it as it stands now....until I get the urge to go speilunking under the floorboards!! That did the trick. Great article on the wake from sleep function. Explains why my iMac will not wake as it is 1st gen intel and only on WiFi.
