Snow Leopard and the Apple TV
One of the advantages of living in New Zealand is that we are a full day ahead of the USA. So, tomorrow for me is the day after tomorrow for the USA. That means tomorrow is the 28th and I will be taking delivery of my shiny new copy of Snow Leopard…
This version of OSX should solve one of my biggest bugbears with the Apple TV… in order to access all of my media (far greater than 160Gb) I need to leave my synchronised computer switched on. According to the Apple blurb, with Snow Leopard and a compatible AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule base station, my iMac can go to sleep yet continue to share its files with my Apple TV, waking when I need it and sleeping when I don’t.
That’s got to be a good thing.. for my iMac, my power bill and the environment. I’ll let you know how it goes…

if that works it would be very cool and seal my purchase of a imac but I would be surprised if it does because atv needs to communicate with itunes…

It sounds very cool and here’s how it should work:
1) iMac Bonjour Networking registers its services with the Airport Extreme
2) When the iMac goes to sleep it tells the Airport Extreme to act as a proxy for its Bonjour services
3) When ATV tries to reach the iMac via the Bonjour iTunes service it is really talking to the Airport Extreme which will wake up the iMac to service the requests
4) The iMac goes back to sleep saving your $$ and the world.
In theory at least….with the GM of SL, my iTunes library disappears from other Mac’s iTunes when it goes to sleep. Maybe some updates for Airport or iTunes are needed as well.

Seems to work with my Apple TV
My early 2008 MacBook Pro does not support Wake on Wireless, but Wake on Demand works perfectly with a wired connection to an Airport Extreme(that happens to be running in bridged mode). (The MBP must be on AC power and lid open)
From another Mac (running Leopard) I was able to access file sharing via Finder and with iTunes its Shared iTunes library. Both would cause the MBP to wake up. (Shared iPhoto libraries did not remain visible after the MBP went to sleep)
My Apple TV (wireless connection) was also able to cause the MBP to wake up and access it’s iTunes library. The MBP wasn’t the designated sync’ing computer, but was configured as a shared computer. (I won’t be upgrading the sync’ing computer to SL until later this weekend)
Now go put your Mac to sleep and save the planet!
How’s it going down under ?

Thanks E. Great article on the wake from sleep function. Explains why my iMac will not wake as it is 1st gen intel and only on WiFi. I have a spare airport base station so I will set it up as a bridge and connect the iMac to it via ethernet. Will report back on success or not.

That did the trick. So, as we can see, the secret is to have a brand new Mac, or have an ethernet connection. My connection is via my old airport base station. It is only 802.11g but if speed was important then I could hardwire direct to my new (2009) dual band base station or I could shell out for an airport express and hard wire into that. One involves me crawling under the house running cat 6 cable, the other 200 hard earned NZ dollars. I think I’ll live with it as it stands now….until I get the urge to go speilunking under the floorboards!!
