One thing which caught my attention was that all though the Super Bowl theatrical spots are available on Apple’s Trailer page, they are no where to be found on the Apple TV in the Trailer section. Considering these were some of the most anticipated trailers of the year I was a little disappointed and all I know is that I wanted to watch The Transformers trailer in HD on my Apple TV. So how does one go about getting these trailers on to your Apple TV? I’m glad you asked.
Step 1a. Your first stop should always be the iTunes Store. Most if not all of these HD trailers can be found in the movie section of the iTunes Store. Head to the movie section of iTunes, look at the lower right hand part of the page and click on Theatrical Trailers. Click the resolution you want to download, and once it’s finished downloading move on to Step 7.
Step 1b. If your trailer cannot be found in iTunes and If you have Quicktime Pro. Head over to the movie trailer page with the HD trailer you want to download. Click the resolution you want to download, this automatically opens in Quicktime Pro, and once it’s finished loading go to file save as and move on to Step 7.
Step 1c. If your trailer cannot be found in iTunes and If you aren’t lucky enough to own Quicktime Pro, your first step would be to go to the movie trailer page the HD trailer you want to download and view the html source of that page. Right click or Control Click gives you an option to view the source.
Step 2. Search for 720p or 1080p (or 480p if you want) and it’s the 2nd “hit” you want.
Step 3. You’ll find something close to this:
var hdMovie480p = AC.Quicktime.packageMovie(‘movieName480p’,
‘http://movies.apple.com/trailers/paramount/transformersrevengeofthefallen/images/tf_480.mov’, {
width: 88,
height: 26,
href: ‘http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/transformers2/transformersrevengeofthefallen-sbspot_480p.mov’,
target: ‘QuickTimePlayer’,
controller: false,
autoplay: true});
Step 4. The 1st hit (i.e. tf_480.mov) is just the image of the button. The 2nd hit (i.e. transformersrevengeofthefallen-sbspot_480p.mov) is actually a file that points to where the real trailer is ‘hidden’.
Step 5. Take the 2nd URL and add an h between the _ and the resolution:
From:
http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/transformers2/transformersrevengeofthefallen-sbspot_480p.mov
To:
http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/transformers2/transformersrevengeofthefallen-sbspot_h480p.mov
Step 6. Next you can enter that URL into your browser and save it when it finishes downloading or whatever.
Step 7. Open up iTunes and create a playlist called Movie Trailers and drag in your newly downloaded movie trailer. This is to help you keep your trailers arranged but the least necessary step.
Step 8. Sync your new movie trailer to your Apple TV, you will find the trailer titles listed under the Movies Tab.
Step 9. Head on over to your couch and watch the new Transformers trailer, or whatever your favorite trailer may be, frame by frame on your HDTV.
It’s important to note that if you want your newly created Movie Trailers Playlist to appear on your Apple TV you must enable this option in the Settings>Audio & Video>Shop Playlists setting.
Thats it, it might seem like much, but once you get the hang of it you’ll have your Apple TV full of your favorite movie trailers in no time. If anyone has any suggestion about how to make this process quicker, please feel free to let us know.
