DIY Apple TV Home Media Server

Posted January 23rd, 2009 in Tutorial by Ben K.

One product that Apple is sorely missing from it’s iTunes universe is a Home Media Server. There are some products out there that claim to “support” iTunes, however they only really stream music to other libraries. What most of us really want is a centralized repository that we can use to sync content to various devices. You might have an Apple TV, many iPods and multiple computers all with different libraries.

I was naively optimistic when I heard rumors that something like this would be announced at Macworld this year. In the absence of that announcement, or any suitable commercial substitute I setup my own solution.

Setting up the Server

I only recommend a PC cause you’ll certainly be able to find one cheaper. Get a clean install of XP if you can. Make sure you have some kind of remoting software like Remote Desktop or VNC. The PC just needs to be powerful enough to run iTunes.

I used a Compaq laptop, mainly because it’s what I had lying around, but there are added benefits to using a laptop. Other than the small size, it’s nice to use a laptop as a server since it comes with it’s own monitor, keyboard and mouse. It also has battery backup built in, so you wont have to worry about starting it back up after a brown out.

You’ll also need something for storage, unless your server already has enough. I got a 1TB Western Digital MyBook so I don’t have to worry about space for awhile. Remember, you can’t span a single library across multple disks, so choose wisely.

Step 1 – Setup the Network

Ethernet is preferrable to Wireless for speed’s sake. The server can go anywhere, so you might as well put it next to your router.

Make sure the right ports are open, or disable the Firewall if your router has one. Add these port numbers as exceptions under the Windows Firewall settings in the Control Panel.

Ports: VNC=5900, RDP=3389, SuperSync=5360

Make sure you setup the remoting software. For RDP look under Control Panel > System > Remote. For VNC use a server like TightVNC.

Step 2 – Copy your Content

Connect your external drive to your computer with your existing iTunes Library. Copy the iTunes Music folder to the external drive. You don’t need any of the library Metadata.

Connect your external drive to the server. In iTunes change your iTunes Music folder location to the iTunes Music directory on the external HDD. (Preferences > Advanced)

In iTunes click File > Add Folder to Library. Then find the iTunes Music folder.

Step 3 – Connect the Apple TV

On your Apple TV go to Settings > Computers. Go back to iTunes and enter the passcode from the Apple TV. Start Syncing and Enjoy!

One of the lesser advertised features of the Apple TV is that if your iTunes library is larger than your ATV drive, it will still display all the content on the ATV, but it will stream it as necessary. I didn’t want my ATV drive to be completely full at all times, so I set the syncing preferences to only sync the 10 most recent Movies and TV Shows. As long as your on a fast network it should stream fine. I’m using Wireless N, I’m not sure about G.

At this point your server is ready to go and you can continue to archive all your content to the server without having to clutter up your primary computer. I ripped my entire DVD collection using Handbrake and now I have everything at my fingertips.

Synchronization

I could actually live without an Apple Media Server if they could solve this problem in iTunes. There should be a good way to not just stream, but copy and sync media between libraries that are authorized. Thankfully the third-party software SuperSync does just that.

SuperSync gives you a graphical delta of two remote iTunes libraries and allows you to push and pull between them. The software is a little complicated at first, but once you get used to it, it’s pretty nice. They have a demo movie that explains most of it.

Just setup SuperSync on your server and primary computer, and you can easily copy content back and forth.

Streaming Music

One of the benefits to having a server like this is that it’s very convenient for streaming music throughout the house. All you need is a Airport Express and an iPhone/iPod Touch. Download the Apple Remote software for your iPhone and set it up to control your server library. Hookup the Airport Express to your stereo, and select it as the output speakers for your server. The Apple Remote software will let you do this from the Settings, or on the screen while a track is playing.

iPhone Extras

The iPhone can be a handy tool for managing your server and controlling your Apple TV. For example, there are many remoting clients for VNC and RDP. I use Jaadu RDP and it works great. I can be on my couch and connect to the server if I have any simple issues with it.

And of course the Apple Remote iPhone Application is an awesome tool for the Apple TV. Other than being able to browse your library, there’s a really cool feature that I didn’t know was there till I stumbled upon it. If you go to a text input screen on the Apple TV, a keyboard pops up on the iPhone. Pure genius.

This is great. I’m so glad I stumbled on this site.
    What I am wondering?

Is the appleTV still 1ghz with 256MB ram.

I set up an old Apple Cube that I am running headless as my home media server… much prettier than a Compaq laptop. ;) Anyway, the link I added to this post shows how I set it up originally when it was still running 10.3.9. Since then I upgraded it to 10.4 so I cold run MyTunesRSS for sharing the iTunes library to any computer (or iPhone for me) on my network with a browser. My AppleTV just streams everything from the iTunes running on the Cube… I do not do any syncing except for a single playlist so I can get the AppleTV to play streaming radio channels. I also added some SMB shares to the mix so I could add some locations to Boxee that I don’t want the kids having easy access to in the standard AppleTV interface. This setup works extremely well, although, I will soon be replacing the Cube with an old G4 tower so I can add USB2 ports, a Superdrive for burning CDs and DVDs, and another hard drive to use for backups of friends’ machines when I get stuck fixing their Windows problems. If I can find a cheap AGP card for the Cube that has S-Video, it will probably end up in the living room next to the AppleTV to serve as a Pandora Radio player.

Thanks for the write-up. Quick question – do you rip your DVDs as MP4s using Handbrake? Reason I’m asking is that I used to have a Windows Media Center PC and have a couple hundred gigs worth of VOBs ripped directly from the DVDs. Is the Handbrake/MP4 direction better for you?

  • TB

    To Ben:
So do you leave your Compaq laptop running 24/7? So is your 1TB Western Digital MyBook?
I know the AppleTV is really doing just that but I do have a problem with complex electronic equipment running 24/7 when they’re not really built for that (overheating being the main issue).

  • http://garbageburrito.com Ben K.

@Jim, I used the Apple TV setting on Handbrake which uses H.264. I’m really happy with it, the quality seems to be better than SD movies from iTunes.

@TB, yes I leave it on 24/7. Computer’s should be able to handle this. I always leave my work computer on. It shouldn’t overheat just sitting there, only if it’s being over tasked.

That brings up a good point that I forgot to mention in my post. Make sure you change your power settings on your server to never go into standby or shut off disks. Unless you have wake on LAN, your Apple TV wont find the server it it’s suspended.

We just got our $150 G4 Cube.

We Target Mode upgraded it up to Leopard off the wife’s PB G4, patched the ethernet to the Airport Extreme, plugged in our 1Tb iTunes Library Drive to the USB & Started it up.

With the MacBook we brought it up on the network &, thru screen sharing, option-launched iTunes & chose the external Library. We told it to never sleep & stuck a cheap USB Lamp with some Rosco Lux 76 Gel on the back to glow the Whole Thing.

We set up sharing to the ATV & we have a $150, 1Tb, MOMA quality Server. Looks great in the living room. Trippy @ Night.
The ATV Fits under it Perfectly, The way a Cube Should Look ! (no keyboard, mouse or monitor)

  • Nick

Another great feature of ATV is that it now allows you to play your music directly from your ATV via Airtunes to an Airport Express base station. I have the same setup as suggested in the original report but I now put all if my music on sync and then use my iphone to play my music without having to have either my TV or my laptop/iMac switched on.
I am a huge evangelist for ATV… it is a highly underestimated device and with handbrake, I now have the multimedia setup that I wanted.

  • Matt

Great write up! I received an 40gig ATV for Christmas, and this is exactly what I’m looking for.

Question: I have an Acer Aspire One running iTunes that I’m thinking would make a good server. Anyone know if a Netbook would be suitable? I also have an old iBook G3 and iMac G4, but for the size, the Acer could be ideal.

I’ve been doing something basically like this for about a year with a Windows box in the basement. I think you have added a couple of good ideas and folks ought to consider the laptop option a bit more.

I’ve had that windows box on 24/7 for about a year and it got me to thinking about my crazy electric bill. That machine alone is probably costing me about $30/month to power, which is about 10% of my monthly bill. Doing this with a laptop should be a lot more efficient. I personally think the global warming stuff is a false religion, but I do think saving 10% on my electric bill makes sense.

  • Allan

I’ve been using a Mac mini as a base for my AppleTV needs for some time.

iTunes can use as many drives as you can plug in. I have music on one and TV/Movies on another. I’ll be adding a third HD in a few weeks.

Just don’t let iTunes manage the files. Easy.

  • YodaMac

You didn’t really talk about how you set up your 1TB drive, but I am assuming it’s just a single HD…

I purchased two 750GB mini-stack drives and set them up as a RAID using Disk Utility. I like the added protection of having all my media mirrored on two drives.

There are only two kinds of hard drives – those that have failed and those that will fail. :)

Have you guys tried SuperSync? I find it a great iTunes synching device. It’s working great for me and my family to merge music between our computers to create a master library around the house.

Check it out for yourself. You can download it for free:

Due to previous grouping issues with video I had 2 old Windows boxes in the basement to stream video. One for kids movies and one for other stuff. 2 months ago I built one box and using virtual machines I merged these together. Handbrake for Movies and I record a lot of stuff from my EyeTV. I transfer the files over the network then remote into the system and add them to the appropirate library. Very sweet.

I also used VisualHub and converted all of our old home movies to H.264 (and anything new from iMovie) and added another virtual server to the mix. This makes it easy for the kids to know where and what they can watch. It also makes streaming to multiple  TVs.

  • Dave

Thanks for the info. I plan on buying the HP Media Server, pair it with my pc network and AppleTV. I have done fairly well with Handbrake. Do you know of any pitfalls to what I described?

  • pete

    Hi,
got a Tranquil WHS Media Server with the WD eco drives. Tring to get it to stream (or copy?) directly to ATV – audio and video – without going through a PC. Any ideas?…

    Pete,

So long as you are running iTunes on your server box, the ATV will be able to pull off of the server’s iTunes library. That is, NAS boxes with iTunes “servers” won’t cut it, as there is no actual instance of iTunes running on the NAS. I have an MSI nettop box (dual-core atom cpu) running TinyXP running iTunes 24/7. It works great as a headless server that I control from my laptop. I also use it to Handbrake-rip DVDs and MetaX code the rips. The ripping doesn’t affect streaming performance at all.

And, since no-one mentioned Meta-X above, I should add that this program completes the Apple TV movie experience for me. It semi-automatically adds cover art, chapter titles, and description info to the .264 Handbrake rips, so my ripped movies look just like iTunes Store movies in the ATV menu. Awesome.
