Final Poll For ’08 – First Poll For ’09

First off I want to thank everyone for supporting Apple TV Junkie through out our first year of existence. Technically the site went live in February of ’08, but we’ll celebrate properly then.

Why don’t we leave ’08 with a year in review poll and the big question being, Did the Apple TV live up to your expectations this year? We did get Movie Rentals, and in HD, same day as DVD release purchase titles, the ability to purchase movie content, HD TV content and other various interface improvements.

Let us know what you think, Yay or Nay, by taking the poll to the right, and maybe leave a comment about what you would realistically like to see come to the Apple TV in ’09.

Everyone have a Safe and Happy New Year!

Got my ATV in August when Apple started offering movie rental for Canada. I read the past CNet article so my disappointment (and wag of the finger) goes to the movie studios. Movies taking a long time to come for rental, being pulled, etc.

On the other hand, I wish the ATV would support a few more file formats and pull from UPnP AV devices.

I would like to see two things in the next year for the Apple TV:

!) HD Purchase titles. In the 2.3 update I noticed that in the My Movies section they are now marking HD files like they do in the My TV Shows section.

2) The ability to subscribe to Podcast directly on the Apple TV. When I bought my ATV last January I was hoping this would be included in the Take 2 update but it was not. I would really like to have my ATV house all my podcasts so they won’t take up spaee on my Macbook.

Also on my “wish list”:

-Ability to purchase and start downloads on my AppleTV at home from anywhere using MobileMe (or my iphone)

-Subscribe to podcasts directly from AppleTV

-An AppleTV SDK for developers to write Apps. And an AppleTV App Store to go with that. Games!

-Continued software improvements/updates with one more year at least using same AppleTV hardware before a revamp.

My wishes for ATV:
More & quicker availability of rental titles. I was soo happy there was an alternative to scraping the newsgroups, downloading, unpacking, finding missing parts, extacting, burning etc.
But slowly I got fed up with waiting for good movies. It has taken me back to the dark side now. I just downloaded a couple of movies to get me throught the holidays. These are movies that are already available for rent elsewhere.

It’s a shame to see AppleTV being so neglected.

Though many people may say that Apple TV didn’t live to their expectations, we must realize that the handicaps come from the Studios. I had a good year with Apple TV. I went to Blockbuster 3 times since I bought my Apple TV (March 08) and all movies were available after release after 2-4 weeks.

I would love to have the option of not removing rentals if the movie(s) were on the wish list.

I like the idea of renting from Mobile Me. That would be neat.

The option of including Apple TV Junkie as one of the options to see what is going on with the incoming and outgoing movies.

Able to shut the damn thing off. It runs hot and I’m sure I’m paying a pretty penny for that heat that is generating. Oh and the random turn ons that happen from time to time

A movie Genius feature (though many will call “people who watched this also watched” a Genius feature)

HD Purchases are top of my list although the studios are likely to hold back on this until blu-ray beds in further. Hopefully we get this later this year?

Better content ‘discovery’ is a must for me. AppleTV makes it too difficult to find new titles (AppleTVJunkie does the trick for HD, sadly no longer SD)

Specifically:
1) Browseable upcoming releases (not just a handful of titles)
2) Browseable recent additions (not just new releases also catalog and classic titles)
3) Ability to set up alerts by title or actor and be notified when movies featuring them are added.
