1. The problem with the PS3 UI for video is the same old story with Sony. They place a higher priority on the UI being pretty-tech than easy. Because of this, it takes waaay too much attention (concentration) and key presses to get what you want.

2. I could find no way to play a trailer for the movie being considered. At the store top level, they do have theatrical trailers, but AFAIK nothing for the items in the store. Not surprisingly, they also have HD Blu-Ray trailers, which is really nice.

3. I find the wallet function really, really annoying. Why can’t you just charge the movie to your credit card? Is this because of the audience for PS3, which tends to be teens?

4. I am downloading a couple movies in HD to also do a comparison. It appears that you can choose to either download ‘while watching’ or ‘in background’. The precise meaning of “background” will need to be confirmed by a bit of testing.

5. I also noticed that, contrary to AppleTV’s 30-day/24-hour on rentals, PS3 is 15-day/24-hour. The reason for this escapes me, unless it’s because Sony is a content provider (studio) and a principal in the Blu-Ray consortium? This could well be the reason.

…7. Warning! On the PS3 there is no warning when you select a downloaded movie for play. So, if you like to push buttons quickly, make sure you’re accurate, since the 24-hour clock will begin if you happen to start a movie prematurely.

8. The HD files are huge! I downloaded three (3) test files and they were 6, 6.2 and nearly 7.2GB (Spider-Man HD) respectively. If I recall correctly, that’s considerably larger than the Apple TV HD downloads? I’ll have to check, but I thought they ranged from 4-5GB. So, the PS3 files will need to justify those file sizes in quality of presentation, since the penalty in download times will be substantial. Although, I will point out that, although I didn’t time them (probably should have, in retrospect), they didn’t seem that long…
