Problem: Owner of Atv has tons of movies already. User can rip to his HD most of his movies, quality on most recent (5-7 years) looks pretty good streamed to Atv. No real money making for the studios if people aren't going to buy movies. Honestly, I have some movies on HD that I bought used and ripped the SD DVD just for the Atv.
I want HD purchases (they don't have to be 1080p either) available and then we might see Atv take off even more.
Atv is a great concept, love the device. It doesn't require a huge HD since I am streaming from my computer. It needs better quality purchasable HD level movies.
Not sure Apple has full control of that and the studios are learning from the music side of the iTunes store that success is there, just they are not wanting Apple to lock them in as hard as the music industry was. Apple's movie success is hurting their movie success.

As a super supporter of the AppleTV, and as someone who is good and ready to say "Buh Bye" to physical DVDs, I want nothing more than to see the AppleTV flourish! Trouble is, I'm afraid it may just be ahead of it's time... :(

I think Apple may have missed an important "window" to success in not being able to deliver HD content before the HD-DVD "war" was decided. I'm guessing it was more of the Studios heel-dragging than anything Apple did, but the result is the same. People are now looking to Blu-Ray as a DVD replacement, and won't consider seriously investing in virtual media until Blu-Ray has run it's inevitable course.

...Maybe when/if this county ever embraces a national broadband policy and brings America up to respectful upload/download speed standards compared to some other countries..

...Maybe when/if people finally get tired of purchasing the SAME CONTENT over and over from Hollywood... (VHS - DVD - Blu-Ray DVD - )...

...Maybe then something like the AppleTV will shine as a virtual, online, always-accessible library of every movie ever made - for your HDTV and for your iPod.

For me, that "when" is now. Here's hoping the rest of the world catches up someday.
