Where In The World Is The Indiana Jones Trilogy?

If there was one benefit I was looking forward to from Apple announcing that movies would be available same day as their DVD release was the release of the Indiana Jones Trilogy. Sure we could argue about the quality of the download, but hey, we were getting OG Indiana Jones on the 13th of May right? Apparently not.

“Apple® today announced that new movie releases from major film studios and premier independent studios are available for purchase on the iTunes® Store (www.itunes.com) on the same day as their DVD release.”

That was a quote from Apple’s press release on same day movie releases. Notice how the quote states “new movie releases”. Could this be why we didn’t get Indiana Jones yesterday? Because it’s technically a catalog title? Just a little something to think about if you were expecting to see Indy in the iTunes Store yesterday.

To be fair, Indiana Jones isn’t a new release, it’s a re-release of old material. And probably a special negotiation at that; They are some of the biggest movies of all time. They’ll probably show up with major fanfare. Along with the original Star Wars trilogy.

You seem to have missed that the studios that are taking part in this (listed in the same press release):

“New releases and catalog titles will be available from 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios. ”

Hmmm dont see Lucas Films or Paramount Home Video on that list there. No offense but if your going to gripe you might want to read the press release all the way through before complaining.

freestate- I”ll give you Lucas Films, since they did co-produce the films with Paramount, who knows what the distribution rights are. But, Paramount Home Video, or Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment which it is now called is just a Division of Paramount Pictures which is listed. Unless you are telling me that Apple in it’s press releases should also of mentioned Warner Home Video, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment…..You get the idea.

FYI. The Special Edition DVD’s are distributed by Paramount.

I would add that George Lucas is famously oinky about releasing his films on new media. It took forever for him to move from Laserdisc to DVD. And I predict he’ll be twice as annoying about Bluray, even though the format war is decided. Who knows why he is this way, but he is…

Eddie, Lucsfilms controls all of the Indiana Johns titles rights (Paramount has just been used as a distributor and has no rights to it):

“Lucasfilm manages the rights to films in the Star Wars saga and the Indiana Jones trilogy, as well as Tucker: The Man and His Dream, Willow and Labyrinth, and requests related to those films should be directed to Lucasfilm’s Publicity Department.”

freestate — I stand corrected. George Lucas really does own everything. One other interesting thing I noticed is that Lucasfilm was a Studio which iTunes had listed in the TV Show section. This was when the Clone Wars cartoon series was offered. I had not noticed that the Clone Wars series is now gone and so is Lucasfilm’s listing under studios. Hopefully something new is being worked out and we’ll get things like the Indian Jones series and maybe one day the Star Wars series.
