What’s In A Name Or Acronym? I Want My AVD?

I’ve been thinking. Now that Apple will be releasing titles same day as the DVD release, what do I call the type of movie Apple is releasing. Technically it’s no longer a Digital ~~Video~~ Versatile Disc release. Is it an AVD (Apple Video Download)? A DDV (Digital Video Download)? A ADV (Apple Digital Video)? I say we coin the term or acronym for the next generation of digital movies. I’ll start below, let me know what you think. Don’t forget to add HD for the High Def downloads as well. My vote goes for AVD.

AVD – Apple Video Download
A-DVD – Apple Digital Video Download
DDV – Digital Download Video
ADV – Apple Digital Video
DVDL – Digital Video Download
ADD – Apple Digital Download (I couldn’t resist)
DMD – Digital Media Download/Digital Movie Download (maxcalibre)

But I suppose confusion (and mass hysteria) could ensue….

… so I’d vote for DDL – Digital Download. (covers music, video, etc.)

… or VD – Video Download? Hmm, sounds catchy…

I believe the most widely-accepted acronym is DD (digital download).

DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc (not “Digital Video Disc”). Anyway, what about DMD – Digital Media Download/Digital Movie Download?

Normally I might agree with Galley, but couldn’t Digital Download cover anything digital that you would download? I may be wrong in this but aren’t these movies which you can purchase same day as DVD unique to Apple? Why call Blu-Ray Blu-Ray then? They are nothing but DVD’s. Digital “Versatile” Discs. I believe that is the most widely-accepted acronym.

I’m liking DMD also.

How about stirring the pot some more. Hopefully we soon will be able to purchase HD movies. If so how about the following??

ITMV (iTunes Movie Download Video) (640×480)
ATMSD (AppleTV Movie Download, Standard Definition) (720×480)
ATMHD (AppleTV Movie Download, High Definition) (1280×720)

I think a more general term might be better. I don’t think Apple or iTunes should feature at all. We are referring to the media/format, not the supplier or source. I also think the term should be applicable to all movies/TV shows in our media libraries, so the fact of it being a download or something we’ve ripped ourselves shouldn’t come into it either. We want to be able to say, “I have ‘x’ amount of (insert acronym here)’s in my collection’.

So how about something like DEM – Digitally Encoded Movies/Media?

Well techincally DVD’s are Digitally Encoded Movies/Media. I think what makes these Apple titles different is one…..and I could be wrong….Apple is the only online source for purchase of same Day/Date of DVD titles for now…..two, you download them and three you can only play them on Apple hardware. But yes, it also makes sense to include TV shows as well.

I like matrix6028′s suggestion of using AppleTV Movie Download. Or just ATM for short. Something like, “I have ‘X’ amount of ATM’s in my movie library. That’s my two cents.
