ATVJ Gets Mentioned As An Apple TV Resource At Peachpit.com

Peachpit Press provides an excerpt from their book The Apple TV Pocket Guide at www.peachpit.com. When you reach page five of the book excerpt online, Buy and Rent Media Using the Apple TV, Apple TV Junkie is mentioned as a resource which tracks all the new movies and TV shows that are available on the Apple TV. Now, any press is good press for ATVJ, but I can’t claim that we have ever tracked new TV shows to this point. But we would like to thank Peachpit for the mention and we’ll have to look for the book to see if we made it to print.

I noticed you stopped listing SD movies. Can that be brought back. I prefer HD movies but it’s nice just to know all the movie available for rent.

The other thing I noticed is Apple TV is offering movies that are not available on iTunes. King of Kong returned as an SD movie and it even gives a disclaimer that it is in Apple TV format and cannot be transfered back to iTunes.

Oh, one last thing. The Genres are now setup like the top movies category with “just added” and top rented” listings.

Regarding our SD movies list. Once Apple added all of the purchase only movies to Apple TV it became too much work to try and distinguish between what was a rental and was a purchase only title. This is one of the problems I have with Apple TV right now. There is no easy way to tell what is a rental title and a purchase title. You literally have to click into the title to see what it is. I hope Apple has an interface revision for this in the future. There are many more titles available then what Apple is listing as a Top Rental or Top Purchase or Newly Added and I don’t want to click through everyone to see what I can or can’t rent.

Regarding rental only titles. This is an issue we are also aware of. Again, Apple does not make it easy to distinguish between Rental Only, Rental/Purchase or Purchase Only. All though I am glad to see that Apple has added the new viewing options to the Genre list as you said.

I must agree with lameoneagain about visibility to SD movies… When you commented about the quandary, you said that you were not going to include SD movies in the count. But I never imagined you meant to drop them from listing altogether…

Now, I may well be missing something, but in the iTunes database Rent/Buy are tagged as “VIEW MOVIE”, Buy-only is “ADD MOVIE” and Rent-only is “RENT MOVIE”. That would seem to give ample indication, but…

I must be missing something?

Unfortunately, Apple continues its quirky and annoying behavior on communicating product detail. They do the same thing with the non-publication of product update changes. And they clearly make getting information from iTunes like pulling teeth. Very much like a donkey drags its damn hooves just to P/O the handler. It’s beeping frustrating!

Let me start this response by saying that we my bring back listing SD movies in the future, but for now it’s not going to happen. What we want to do is bring everyone the complete list of SD rental titles. Sure Apple my have revised the Genre section in Apple TV to show recent releases for each genre, but we all know Apple’s track record in keeping up with their own released titles. What do they list…10 titles? Beyond that you have to go hunting and with the addition of all of the purchase only titles this makes this hunt way more time consuming then we would like. Well what about the “All Rentals” area in the iTunes Store you say. Sure you supposedly get a list of rental titles, but what about Apple TV only rentals like The King of Kong? That requires digging, and again for right now, too time consuming. So until someone decides to invest some working capital, yes money, into our operation here so that we can invest the time needed to put toward making the process and operation more efficient it’s not going to happen any time soon.

That being said I would like to thank the hand full of people who did donate a few weeks back to help support the work we at Apple TV Junkie are doing. As long as people like you support us, we will give back as much as possible.
