I’ve been thinking recently about what Steve Jobs said back at MacWorld. Specifically about his claim that new movies will be available to Apple TV 30 days after they are released to DVD. Now, is it just me or does this seem to not be happening like Señor Jobs predicted. What I wanted to know was, to what extent are we not getting New Releases 30 days after the DVD release.
I headed over to www.joblo.com. They provide an up to date list of DVD and Blu Ray Release Dates from January 08 thru October 08. What I noticed, after looking at this first months worth of movies, is that it appeared hit and miss as to what movies Apple was releasing. But upon searching further, Apple seems to have done a decent job of adding much of the February releases throughout the month of March. The exceptions were notable titles like Beowolf, 30 Days of Night and American Gangster. American Gangster was a title which showed up for about 4 days on Apple TV before it was yanked. Even then, Apple manage to sprinkle in a few new movie releases from March throughout this first month. If we continue to follow this pattern we should begin to see titles such as I Am Legend, Atonement, Southland Tales and Into The Wild released on Apple TV throughout this month.
Is it possible that my expectations have been to high regarding Apple’s movie releases. Maybe, maybe not. There is still the issue of more titles showing up in HD format. Steve Jobs never said that X number of movies would be guaranteed in HD. So for now, I’ll be watching and waiting, just like everyone else. After all, it’s only been a month.
